Advanced Enrollment for Students in Military Families (Act 2022-90)
A student from a military family who is not yet a domiciliary of the local school zone may register to enroll in a public K-12 school remotely (e.g., via electronic means) before physically residing in the state, provided specific conditions are met. This aims to reduce barriers to educational continuity for military children, who often face disruptions due to frequent relocations. It ensures they can secure a spot in their new school ahead of time, minimizing delays in education. Conditions for eligibility include:
- Military Connection: A parent or legal guardian must be on active military duty and either transferred or pending transfer to a nearby military installation or reservation.
- Documentation: The parent or guardian must provide a copy of the official military order confirming the transfer.
- Enrollment Forms: The parent or guardian must complete and submit the required enrollment forms and documentation, except for proof of residency, which is deferred until the student arrives in the school zone. Once the family is established and is residing in the school zone, proof of residency must then be shared with the school prior to commencing attendance.
- School Opportunities: The school shall make available to students in this section the same opportunities for school assignment, selection of courses, and sporting activities and other extracurricular activities as those offered to resident students.
